The Awakening:

THE PAINTINGS

Two paintings were required for the film:

George Stubbs "A Horse Attacking a Lion" 1765

Artemisia Gentileschi "Judith and Holofernes" 1612-21

These paintings were required to look old - or as they would in the 1920's.  They were painted using the original pigments, including lead white, Raw Umber and Vermilion.

To achieve the deep glossy tones in the Gentileschi, a mixture of beeswax and turpentine was employed.

The Stubbs is extensively cracked.  This was achieved through preparing the gesso ground in a particular way, so that the paint could later be cracked.
